First, explaining the dull-rooted: this person encompasses both those in training and beyond training. This is further divided into two kinds: (1) originally dull-rooted, belonging to the former five gotras; (2) not yet able to transform the faculties to become the sixth. The sharp-rooted also encompasses those in training and beyond training; this too has two kinds: (1) intrinsically immovable, and (2) adventitiously immovable. Next are five persons, such as those with an increase of greed, and the balanced; these six encompass those who have not yet entered nobility and those who have entered the Śrāvaka gotra. As for the paths of approach, there are two kinds: (1) sequential approach; (2) leaping approach. The fruits also are two: (1) sequential fruit; (2) leaping, attaining the second and third fruits to the exclusion of the first fruit. In terms of practice there is leaping, but not in the fruits. As for approaching with a leap to attain an Arhat, which is completely severing the afflictions of cultivation of the nine grounds, at the moment of the ninth liberation one abides in the fourth fruit; in the teachings of the Hīnayāna, there is no such thing.
