Regarding the places sought through aspiration therein, they are explained by applying strength and weakness: noble beings detest places of rebirth, and therefore from a single clan's point of departure, they strictly do not take rebirth twice [in that exact clan]. If born among humans, taking two or three rebirths from clan to clan, they only change parents and are unwilling to be reborn [in the same family]; this does not preclude [families] with the same surname Zhang, where the Eastern and Western Zhang clans are distinct, and so one may also take rebirth again. Regarding taking rebirth among the devas, the divine families are numerous: one may take rebirth by changing among the class of the Four Heavenly Kings, or one may take rebirth by changing among the classes of the six higher and lower deva [realms]. It should be known that although these human and divine 'clan-to-clanners' (kulaṃkula) take rebirth while on the path toward once-returner, they retain [the status of] the first fruit and are therefore called stream-enterers.
