Viewing one's own purity as difficult to accomplish means seeing that pure dharmas are difficult to accomplish in one's own person: 1. If one discards pure dharmas and does not cultivate them, they will ultimately never arise spontaneously on their own so that one could obtain them; 2. Outside of pure dharmas, even other worldly matters cannot be accomplished by requesting another, let alone pure matters; 3. Pure [practices] definitely ought to be done, but because the mind is not yet pure, one has not escaped from [defilement]; 4. Merely not doing evil deeds in the present is not called purity or having forever escaped the blazes of affliction, because without the noble path, evil karma is not exhausted; 5. Through the complete realization of the pure path, one's contemplation can be pure; if one does not realize the paths of the trainee and the non-trainee, the cultivation of contemplation is impure.
