However, in the text, it first explains the entity of feeling, mind, and dharmas to be contemplated jointly in general; the subsequent three phrases are simply analogous to the previous application of mindfulness to the body. In explaining the former, it first lists the numbers of feelings, minds, and dharmas, and then repeats and explains them. Among them, regarding feelings being twenty-one or nine kinds, Jing says: subdivided, there are twenty-one; summarized, they make nine. First, the three of pleasure, pain, and neutral are clarified—this is the general category; second, according to the bodily feelings associated with the five consciousnesses, they are divided into three; third, mental feelings associated with the mental consciousness are divided into three, since grief is spoken of as pain; fourth, according to possessing attachment, there are three; fifth, according to being free of attachment, there are three; sixth, according to relying on worldly gratification, there are three; seventh, according to relying on renunciation, there are three. In this way, three times seven make twenty-one feelings in total.
