Regarding “abandonment by restraint,” “abandonment by cutting off,” and so forth, Jing says: Restraining evil is called “restraint.” Initially cultivating tainted striving to restrain those already arisen evil phenomena so that they do not drag forward [further consequences] is called “abandonment by restraint.” Subsequently cultivating taintless striving to cut off the seeds perfumed by already arisen evil is also called “abandonment by restraint.” Those unarisen evil phenomena have the character of arising in the future; in order to cut off their future actual activity, one cuts off their seeds, and therefore it is said to be “for the sake of cutting off”; hence it is called “abandonment by cutting off.”
