第四明九種住心有四作意通止觀品，初、是聞思；二、是了相作意；三、是勝解等次五作意；四、是加行究竟果作意。備云：前二住心是七作意前方便故，名為力勵。次五住心，是了相作意所攝故名為有聞。第八住心，有五作意。第九住心，有果作意。

Fourth, in explaining that the nine mental states have four mental applications (manaskāra) that apply across both śamatha and vipaśyanā categories: The first is hearing and reflection; the second is the mental application of apprehending characteristics; the third comprises the subsequent five mental applications such as resolute determination; the fourth is the mental application of the fruition of cultivation's culmination. Bei says: The first two mental states are the preliminary expedient means for the seven mental applications; hence they are called 'with exertion'. The next five mental states are subsumed under the mental application of apprehending characteristics; hence they are called 'with hearing'. The eighth mental state has five mental applications. The ninth mental state has the mental application of fruition.
