In the former part, from "from time to time" onward, it selects the five marks. The phrase "from time to time, the inner mind is tranquil" refers to cultivating the practice of calm abiding. "From time to time, discerning dharmas through insight that follows marks" refers to cultivating insight. "Regarding the internal and external of one's own and others' bodies, and so forth" means repeatedly generating resolute intention to take the marks of impurity from the internal and external impurities of one's own and others' living bodies, as well as the blue-bruised stages when carried out to the charnel ground after death, and again withdrawing the mind into internal tranquility. Here, if one's own and others' physical sense faculties are called internal, the physical dust supporting the faculties is called external; alternatively, apprehending the internal impurities of one's own and others' bodies is called internal, and apprehending the external impure marks of one's own and others' bodies is called external.
