處善巧中，謂了十二處能作三緣生於六識，第六識同時增上緣根者，即是末那，故論云：此生作意為增上緣，亦可意識同時作意數為增上緣。若依此義即意法處二為緣生於意識，謂增上緣及所緣緣不及前釋。

Regarding skill in the sense-bases (āyatana): it refers to understanding that the twelve sense-bases can act as three conditions to generate the six consciousnesses. The dominant condition sense-faculty that is simultaneous with the sixth consciousness is precisely manas. Therefore the treatise says: 'Attention born of this acts as the dominant condition.' Alternatively, the simultaneous mental factor of attention belonging to the mental consciousness may act as the dominant condition. If based on this meaning, then the two sense-bases of mind and mental phenomena act as conditions to produce the mental consciousness, namely as the dominant condition and the object condition; however, this is not as good as the former explanation.
