In the investigation and reflection upon the common characteristics of desires, where it says "all desires, namely the suffering of birth... up to the suffering of not getting what one seeks," without mentioning the eighth, the suffering of conditioning, Ji says: This is spoken here on the basis of what is universally known in the world. It is spoken on the basis of suffering universally recognized in the conventional world, not on the basis of suffering in the ultimate sense. Although this suffering in the ultimate sense exists in all desires and all matters, because it is difficult to know, it is not mentioned. Now it is explained that the general is set aside in favour of the specific, and therefore it is omitted and not mentioned.
