Jing said: 'Bodhisattvas' cites the persons of the Great Vehicle who possess the gotra. Regarding the 'excellence of the six bases': according to the old explanation, it refers to the Buddha-nature abiding in self-nature, which is the tathāgatagarbha, possessing inconceivable virtues surpassing the sands of the Ganges that are not separated, not divorced, and not different; now it is endowed with the virtues of the six sense bases, and hence it is called the excellence of the six bases. Now it is not so. The 'six bases' are still the six bases such as the eye and so on. As for 'excellence', the ālayavijñāna is the mental base; among the six bases, it is the most excellent. The excellent mental base is that upon which the natural gotra relies. As for 'possessing such characteristics', this summarizes the essence of the natural gotra that relies upon it. This Mahāyāna natural gotra is originally existent, hence it says 'from beginningless time'; its essence is conditioned, and relying upon the ālaya it continues down to the present, hence it says 'transmitted successionally'; because it is not formed through perfuming, it says 'acquired through natural existence'.
