Some say that Dharmapāla's view that during the ten faiths there are no distinct seeds is not correct. As the Renwang jing states, there are differences: prior to the stages, there are three minds—first, the mind of faith; second, the abiding mind; and third, the firm mind. In the position of faith, it is called the cultivated gotra (samudānīta-gotra). As for 'abiding,' the ten understandings and the ten practices—twenty minds in all—are combined into the abiding mind. The firm mind is the mind of the ten dedications. In the Western regions, upon inquiring, no Sanskrit text of that sūtra was heard to exist. Even so, let us now reconcile it: according to the intention of that sūtra, it broadly speaks of gotra as multiple gotras. That is, what that sūtra calls the 'cultivated gotra' refers to the mind of faith, which is the position of the ten faiths. The 'natural gotra' (prakṛtistha-gotra) refers to the abiding mind; the abiding mind in that sūtra refers to the ten understandings and the ten practices, and the ten understandings and ten practices are called the natural gotra.
