In the ninth perception, one understands the variations in the physical appearance of sentient beings possessing lust and so forth; because of cultivating this frequently, the fruition of cultivation, the knowledge of the distinctions of minds, arises. It is named after its object and is also named after its function. (Tai says:) Regarding the affairs and principles of sentient beings, there is obscurity; hence it is said that "affairs and principles are obscure". Words that issue from the mouth and are not esteemed by the world, constantly uttering vulgar speech without any authoritative transmission, are called base and rustic.
