The preceding [chapter] explained reality, which is the realm to be realized. Having realized it, one cannot let it be in vain; one must mature sentient beings and manifest great supernormal transformations, causing them to generate faith and attain the noble fruit. When bodhisattvas benefit themselves and benefit others, manifesting great supernormal powers and cultivating correct practice, they seek future realization of the fruit; when Munis carry out their own Buddha-activities, generating great compassion, rescuing sentient beings, they manifest this spiritual power. Hence it is named the "Chapter on Spiritual Power," explained following the "Chapter on the Meaning of Reality." Furthermore, Master Huiyuan says: Why is it explained next? Because relying on the real meaning, its wondrous function is sovereign; therefore it is explained next. Among the five chapters and seven dharmas, the first three have already been explained, and next the fourth is explained. The old Bodhisattvabhūmi merely called it the "Chapter on Power." In the text, there is first a question and then an answer. In the answer there are three parts: first, briefly distinguishing the two kinds; next, extensively explaining the five kinds; and finally, subsuming manifestations into the three kinds of supernormal powers.
