In the former part, it knows six pairs of minds: 1. It knows minds that have entanglements and minds free from entanglements—manifest afflictions are called entanglements; 2. It knows the mind free [from entanglements] as having concordant binding and dormant dispositions. Tai says: In the West there are two explanations. One says that bond-to-characteristics is called concordant binding, and coarse-heavy binding is called dormant dispositions. The second says: the seeds of secondary afflictions are called concordant bindings, and the seeds of root afflictions are called minds of afflictive dormant dispositions. 3. It knows defiled and undefiled minds, with wrong or correct vows. 4. It knows inferior, middling, and superior minds of the three realms. 5. It knows minds associated with the three feelings. 6. It is able, through a single knowledge of others' minds, to know five pairs of minds of sentient beings: "such existence" is the first pair of minds; "such intrinsic nature" is the second pair; "such categories" is the third pair; "such modes of activity" is the fourth pair; and "such limits" is the fifth pair. Furthermore, it knows the above five pairs of minds in many sentient beings.
