Fourth, explaining the two gates of shared and unshared. Regarding the passage "The śrāvaka has only two thousand worlds and the realm of sentient beings as the sphere of supernormal powers, up to: therefore, at the utmost, only a single realm is the sphere of supernormal powers": Jing and Tai both set forth two explanations. The first says: Why is it that pratyekabuddhas take three thousand [worlds] as their sphere of supernormal powers? Hence the lower text explains that because they cultivate correct practice solely for themselves, only a single trichiliocosm is their sphere, whereas for bodhisattvas, because of benefiting [others], it is three thousand. The second says: Why is it that the śrāvaka takes two thousand container worlds and sentient beings as the sphere of supernormal powers, whereas the pratyekabuddha takes only three thousand container worlds as the sphere of supernormal powers, without mentioning the world of sentient beings? Hence the lower text explains: because the pratyekabuddha subdues only his own single body, he takes only a single container world as his sphere; the śrāvaka and bodhisattva have the benefit of teaching the Dharma to others to deliver human beings, so they take both the container world and the world of sentient beings as the sphere of supernormal powers.
