Regarding the expedients for bringing [sentient beings] to maturity, they are divided into three parts: first, stating the number and listing their designations; second, explaining them individually according to the headings; and third, correlating them with their causes to explain the accomplished expedients. Among the twenty-seven, the first ten concern benefiting oneself, the next six concern benefiting others, the next six re-elucidate benefiting oneself, and the final five re-distinguish benefiting others. Taking the first ten, they make five pairs: the first two form a pair of past and present—the realm (dhātu) is the past and the present conditions are the present; the next two form a pair of faith and aspiration—entering into is faith, and gathering aspiration is one's wishful desire; the next two form a pair of the initial and non-initial; the next two form a pair of distant and near; and the last two form a pair of mental initiation and actual practice. Next, [the six of] benefiting others constitute three pairs: the first two are gathering through material gifts and the Dharma; the next two form a pair of displaying supernormal powers and teaching the Dharma; and the next two form a pair of concealing and revealing in teaching the Dharma. Next, the six that re-elucidate benefiting oneself [are divided into] three grades: preparatory application constitutes the first three, and the three wisdoms constitute the latter three. Next, the five that re-elucidate benefiting others: the first two are the pair of firmness and softness, and the latter three are the pair of self, other, and neither.
