One explanation states: Because of the substance of dharma-grasping, one cannot comprehend the antecedent phenomena; this is precisely called ignorance regarding phenomena. A second explanation states: Dharma-grasping is of itself born of maturation, revealing the substance and function of grasping phenomena; ignorance regarding phenomena generally refers to other minds, such as not understanding deportment and crafts. Or again, not knowing the thickness or thinness of the great earth, the height or lowliness of the mountains, or the depth or shallowness of the great ocean—all these are ignorance regarding phenomena, but one does not necessarily firmly grasp them as having dharma-grasping. Furthermore, with respect to the two vehicles, subsequent dharma-grasping is of an indeterminate nature; just as when afflictions such as greed and anger arise, greed is itself greedy attachment, and there is attachment to phenomena that discerns antecedent phenomena, and anger and the rest are also like this: although they arise simultaneously, they have distinct natures of unwholesomeness and indeterminateness.
