The Commentary explains: 'Stage' (bhūmi) means objective sphere, basis, range of movement, or the meaning of being subsumed; it is the objective sphere traversed by the yoga master, hence named stage, like the ground of dragons and horses, traversing only within this and not going outside. Or, the yoga master relies on this place to increase his own qualities, hence it is named stage, like land for planting and harvesting. Or, the wisdom subsumed by the yoga master's stage manifests relying on this, and increases relying on this, hence it is named stage, like ground of precious jewels. Or, the yoga master moves within this and enjoys his own qualities, hence it is named stage, like the ground of the bull king. Or, the Tathāgatas are named yoga masters, and their equality wisdom and so forth move in the realm free from all conceptual elaboration, within the yoga of unlocated nirvāṇa; because it is subsumed by that, it is named stage. Or, because the seventeen stages are subsumed by and belong to all yoga masters, like a king's territory. Therefore it is named Yogācārabhūmi.
