The mental stage (manobhūmi) has three meanings: first, the manas among the six faculties; second, the manas among the six consciousnesses; third, subsumed under the seventh [consciousness]; these correspond in turn to the three rounds of explanation. However, the six consciousnesses can also be called "groups" (kāya); in this second explanation, just like mental feeling (caitasikā vedanā), it is only called "manas" and is not given the name "group" because only when there is the sense of an aggregation relying on the same substance can it be named a "group", whereas its basis is non-material, hence it is called mental feeling. Because the first and last two explanations are concise, they do not mention the phrase "associated with the group". Because of this, it is not called the "stage of the mind" (cittabhūmi) or the "stage of consciousness" (vijñānabhūmi).
