Lord Jing says: "From the eighth stage upward, there are tainted minds, which therefore constitute hearing and thinking; otherwise, how could one listen to the Dharma in a pure land without giving rise to the two kinds of minds—indeterminate and unwholesome? Toward dharmas previously attained, one does not give rise to preparatory effort, whereas toward those not yet attained, with hearing and thinking as the prerequisite, there is also preparatory effort. That which is without preparatory effort refers to what has previously been attained."
