Ji says: loving-kindness has non-delusion as its wholesome root nature, compassion has non-ill-will as its wholesome root nature, sympathetic joy has non-greed as its wholesome root nature, and equanimity is like the mental factor of equanimity. According to the Hīnayāna, to eliminate delusions contrary to the above, it provisionally uses them for clarifying contemplation; but now, according to the Mahāyāna, because of the three objective realms, it genuinely arouses the immeasurables to save them. Explaining their names: pity is called loving-kindness; sorrowful sympathy is called compassion; rejoicing for others is called sympathetic joy; letting go of concerns is called equanimity—all receive their names from their meanings.
