Fifth, among the six meanings: to make evident the substance of sentient beings, the six faculties of the eye and so forth are established, for the six faculties are the sentient being. Regarding establishing five faculties as the means for superior rebirth, Jing says: the five faculties of faith and so forth pertain to both the tainted and the taintless; tainted faith and so forth induce superior rebirth as humans and devas, while taintless faith and so forth perfume tainted karma to induce superior rebirth in the five pure abodes. Therefore, the present explanation only takes the tainted as inducing superior rebirth, while taintless faith and so forth are mutually subsumed under the three faculties as the definitely superior means for proceeding toward the realization of nirvāṇa.
