Next, the various faculties are distinguished according to whether they are tainted or taintless, and so forth. In this general explanation that the seven stages comprise both tainted and taintless, among the faculties of the stage of neither-perception, Jing says: In terms of their type, the faculties of neither-perception lack the taintless that abandons defilements. If formulated in terms of the continuum of a single person in neither-perception, who can obtain the taintless roaming contemplation of their own stage, then there are two kinds. As for the statement, "Also because of liberation from afflictions, etc.": this is based on an arhat who, having separated from the taints of neither-perception, has faculties that are liberated, which is called taintless; this meaning is not rejected. However, relying on the mind of the stage of neither-perception, one enters the absorption of cessation, and then the seeds of the nine grades of mind turned away [from sensory objects] establish the absorption of cessation; the absorption of cessation is taintless. As stated in [fascicle] sixty-two: One should know that neither-perception also has taintless roaming contemplation.
