Answering the fifth question on the merits of taking refuge: first, through taking refuge one is able to receive moral discipline; second, through maintaining moral discipline the mind rejoices, and therefore secondly one attains great joy; because of joy, one gradually attains concentration, and therefore thirdly one attains samādhi; through concentration one generates wisdom, severs afflictions, and attains purity, and therefore fourthly one attains great purity. Furthermore, one attains four virtues: first, the perfection of great protection, because through receiving refuge the Three Jewels shield and protect, which is called perfection of protection; second, causing wrong faith in one's own mind to become slight; third, entering the assembly of the intelligent; fourth, causing the deities of pure faith to rejoice.
