In demonstrating the correct principle, five kinds of characteristics are clarified. 'Third, it is apprehended through its own characteristic, as the intrinsic entity of a cause is, not through inference': just as through the cause's own characteristic, the capacity to produce an effect is apprehended and not the entity of the effect, this intrinsic entity of the cause is apprehended through direct perception and not through inference. 'Fourth, it is apprehended through its own activity': such as discerning form through activity to reveal eye-consciousness, etc. 'Fifth, because of the alteration of cause and conditions, the effect turns into an alteration': as in the world wheat and so on wither and perish because their generating causes are exhausted, this is alteration of the effect through alteration of the cause; if damaged by encountering fire and the like, this is alteration of the effect through alteration of conditions; such wheat, etc., are not cases where the cause does not alter while the effect alone alters. However, those outsiders say that primordial nature does not alter, while the other principles turn into alteration; one should formulate the inference: Your primordial nature should also undergo alteration, because the effects undergo alteration, like grain, wheat, etc.
