2.3
Among the objects of the nine stages, they are divided into three. The previous two stages finished explaining the substance of the object; these three stages, [beginning with that] with investigation and reflection, are the characteristics of the object, because the characteristics of the object differ as coarse or subtle, lower or higher. This is the intention for their occurrence. 'Investigation' means seeking; 'reflection' means scrutinizing. Either volition or discernment inquiring coarsely into the object is called 'investigation'; these same two scrutinizing and examining the object at a subtle level is called 'reflection'. The two factors are not conjoined in a single moment, because they are of one class yet differ in sequence as coarse and subtle. Now, establishing the three stages based on the presence or absence of these two in those factors is the explanation of the name.
