In the fourth, the establishment of lifespan, regarding formless lifespan doubling or not doubling, as the eighty-fourth fascicle of the Vibhāṣā states: Question: Why is it that in the formless [realm] some lifespans double, some increase by half, and some increase by a small fraction? Answer: Just as the cause of maturation has such power, it likewise receives such a maturation fruit. Furthermore, in the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness, there are limitless modes of activity and there are also different modes of activity: namely, in the sphere of infinite space, the limitless mode of activity incurs a lifespan of ten thousand kalpas, and other modes of activity also incur a lifespan of ten thousand kalpas; in the sphere of infinite consciousness, the limitless mode of activity incurs a lifespan of twenty thousand kalpas, and other modes of activity also incur a lifespan of twenty thousand kalpas. Above this, there are no further limitless modes of activity, but only different modes of activity; therefore their lifespans do not double those below. However, in the sphere of nothingness there is a distinct preeminent, wholesome contemplative practice that subdues 'I' and 'mine' and so on, differing from other stages; because that wholesomeness incurs a lifespan of twenty thousand kalpas, the lifespan incurred by other modes of activity also doubles and redoubles. Furthermore, in the sphere of infinite space and the sphere of infinite consciousness there are śamatha and vipaśyanā: in the sphere of space, śamatha incurs a lifespan of ten thousand kalpas, and vipaśyanā also incurs a lifespan of ten thousand kalpas; in the sphere of consciousness, each of the two practices incurs twenty thousand [kalpas of] lifespan. Above this, there is no preeminent wisdom, but only meditative stabilization; therefore their lifespans do not double those below. The rest is as explained before.
