Question: It was previously stated that ignorance as condition initiates karmic existence, and so forth: whether already moistened or not yet moistened, wholesome and unwholesome karma are both called 'existence' because they can possess fruits. However, based on having already been moistened and being able proximately to possess fruits, it exclusively receives the name 'existence'; prior to being moistened, when first committed and not yet augmented, it is named 'formations'. Based on the superiority and distinctiveness of their meanings, each receives a name. Here, based on the general meaning, it is said that ignorance initiates karmic existence, which is precisely formations. It is only that at the stage of moistening, through the force of grasping, that karma is caused to lead fruits such as consciousness and name-and-form in various places of birth; therefore grasping is singled out as conditioning existence.
