Sixteenth, explaining the scope of the arising of consciousnesses: as for 'If born in the form or formless realms, excluding their lower stages, all become manifest as when in the desire realm'—(Ji says:) this is according to the gate of conforming reasoning: in the upper two realms, all consciousnesses of lower stages do not arise, just as in the desire realm, all upper mental consciousnesses arise without obstruction. Reading the sentence continuously, the meaning is also arrived at. According to the gate of actual principle: in the upper two realms, excluding the consciousnesses unique to the lower stages, the mental consciousnesses of the remaining three realms can all become manifest, because they arise to moisten rebirth. Since it is accepted that above the second dhyāna the three groups of consciousness of the first dhyāna arise, it should also be accepted that a bodhisattva in the form realm may arouse the nose and tongue consciousnesses of the desire realm.
