Regarding ‘purposeful karma’ (故思業), namely ‘having purposefully deliberated, either performing karma or accumulating karma, and so forth’: here, that which is purposefully performed or accumulated is called ‘purposeful karma’, while that which is not purposefully performed or accumulated is called ‘non-purposeful karma’. The Abhidharma[samuccaya] states that purposeful karma is contrary to this, since it applies to both accumulated and non-accumulated. Here, based on distinct, powerful deliberation that will definitely bring about maturation, it is called ‘purposeful karma’; whereas there, based merely on being performed with purposeful deliberation and not being spontaneous karma, it applies even to that which will not obtain fruition, all being called ‘purposeful’. Because the points of comparison differ, there is also no contradiction.
