On "The first four are subsumed under the divine abodes," and so forth: Master Jing explains: here, classifying the contemplation of impurity, benevolence, compassion, and superior signs of form from the previous section as divine abodes is said in terms of the dhyāna on which they rely; because they are not purely the four immeasurables, they are not called brahma abodes. Now, among the six gates, speaking of the four immeasurables as brahma abodes is spoken in terms of their ability to induce brahma merit, purely because they completely expound the four immeasurables. Ji says: benevolence and compassion broadly rely on dhyāna cultivation and are named divine abodes, while specifically relying on immeasurable cultivation they are named brahma abodes.
