Supported by these skillful means and wholesome qualities, the practitioner prevents the middle-grade afflictions, entanglements, and defilements bound to the desire realm from actively manifesting again. Therefore, wishing to examine whether the afflictions have been severed or not, one further applies the mind to inspect, and conformable tranquil characteristics arise; this is called 'the mental application of inspection'.
