The eight liberations are exclusively contemplation of emptiness and exclusively fruits. Thus the four alternatives are established: namely, within the bases of mastery, the initial contemplation is ultimate yet not taintless; the subsequent contemplation is taintless yet not ultimate; the eight liberations are both; and the totalities are neither. Tai says: If one explains according to the ultimate truth, the four formless [attainments] and the subtly subtle [state] are five kinds of resolve (adhimukti); because the mind is subtly subtle, it can induce the attainment of cessation. If one explains according to liberation, the subtly subtle [state] is subsumed under the liberation of the peak of existence (bhavāgra). Generally speaking, the first seven may also be termed resolve, but the eighth is exclusively liberation and is not called resolve, because resolve is a mental factor. As for the nine abodes of birth, they are the nine abodes of sentient beings.
