Now in this text, those of fixed gotra are permanently eradicated and ultimately do not attain Buddhahood; while the Nirvāṇa Sūtra and elsewhere say none fail to attain Buddhahood. The establishment of doctrinal scope each has its basis. The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra says: 'The śrāvakas, having passed through many kalpas in the nirvāṇa realm, indulge in the wine of samādhi and remain intoxicated for a long time; later they awaken from it and generate the great aspiration.' Ancient masters used this to prove that none ultimately enter nirvāṇa without remainder and are permanently eradicated. Ji says: Relying on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, this refers to transformed śrāvakas, and is not truly so.
