Regarding the statement "Why is that? ... up to ... evolving in various ways": This is a provisional concession. If the entities of the eighteen elements had distinct marks and evolved co-existently at all times, one could concede that the gotra falls into multiple continuities. But now, whether they are fully present or not is unfixed: for example, the five sense faculties and five sense objects, in the lower and higher realms, or heavens; in the second dhyāna and above, the five consciousnesses are all absent; the sixth mental consciousness arises and ceases with interruptions in various states, and ceases in the two mindless attainments and the heaven without thought; none of these is the locus of reliance for the gotra. Hence it says, "one sees their separate, diverse continuities evolving in diverse ways."
