First, explaining walking and sitting meditation in the early night, etc. Regarding the words 'in order to protect the bedding, in order to accord with worldly etiquette', etc.: Master Ji says: 'The meaning here is that because one did walking meditation during the day, in the early night one does not do walking meditation in the latter watch; walking meditation in the early night is not done far away or where one walked by day, for fear of thieves stealing the bedding, so one is made to walk near the bedding. Also, during the night, deportment must be upright, so one walks in the early night to accord with worldly etiquette. Also, worldly people walk about in the early night, so having monastics do walking meditation in the early night accords with worldly etiquette and matches them. Walking meditation in the early night has two causes: first, to protect and maintain the bedding, hence not far away; second, to accord with the world, hence walking during the daytime. Now it is explained that to protect the bedding, it is only in the daytime and early night, and when the middle watch arrives, one returns to stay in the dwelling and sleep. Also, to accord with worldly sleep during the night, one only does walking and sitting meditation in the early and late watches, and lies down to sleep in accordance with the Dharma during the middle watch.'
