Fifth, regarding properly expounding the true Dharma: first, expounding worldly phenomena, expounding those worldly Dharmas of generosity, ethical discipline, and meditative cultivation to cause them to abandon the miserable destinies and attain rebirth in the human and heavenly realms, which is termed the initial task. To reveal the faults among the five desires and cause them to abandon defiled attachment, the discourse on generosity is spoken; wishing to cause them to escape those miserable destinies, the discourse on ethical discipline is spoken; wishing to cause them to leave the lower [realms] and be born in the upper pure heavens, the discourse on cultivating concentration to be born in heaven is spoken.
