Birth, old age, sickness, and death have briefly two meanings: First, being oppressive in nature, they are subsumed under the suffering of suffering. As stated in the Abhidharmasamuccaya and other texts, among the eight sufferings, the first five are subsumed under the suffering of suffering. Second, being transitory in nature—birth transforms into death, old age transforms youth, sickness transforms strength, and death transforms life—they are therefore described here as the suffering of change. That which attends the phenomenon of separation from what is loved is not the suffering of change. Subsuming them by meaning: here, the first suffering is subsumed under the suffering of suffering; the second and third are subsumed under the suffering of change; and the fourth alone is subsumed under the suffering of conditioned existence.
