Among the seven limbs of awakening, Master Jing explains: all use "equal/right" (saṃ-), which has the meaning of equality; exhaustion and non-arising are both equally awakened to, hence called "equal awakening" (sambodhi); "limb" has the meaning of part and the meaning of cause; these seven can serve as limbs for the equal awakening of the knowledge of exhaustion and non-arising, hence called limbs of equal awakening. The Dharma Master says: these seven dharmas awaken equally and assist one another simultaneously, hence called limbs. Master Ji explains: regarding all having the character "deng" (equal/right): the Dharma Master says: this equal awakening refers to the Tathāgata, and the seven limbs can causally accomplish equal awakening, so they all have the character "deng"; if so, the subsequent eight limbs of the noble path should also be like this, but within the previous five positions this meaning is obstructed by objections. An alternative view says: the seven awakenings are in the path of seeing, and the eightfold right [path] is in the path of cultivation; the path of seeing is without marks, while the path of cultivation has conceptual discrimination; because there is conceptual discrimination, there are marks; because there are no marks, there is equal awakening; hence it is called equal awakening.
