Aspiring for great awakening, showing compassion toward sentient beings, or seeking bodhi with resolute and vigorous determination, cultivating and realizing over a long period of time, permanently transcending the world, possessing great practice and great fruit: therefore one is called a 'bodhisattva'. The gotra, generation of the aspiration, cultivation of practice, and attainment of the fruit of such a bodhisattva are all collectively referred to as the 'Bodhisattva Stage'. Within it there are four yogasthānas. The old Dichilun translates this as 'bases of means' (upāyasthāna), while the present [translation] says 'yoga', which is properly translated as 'conjunction', the meaning of which is as explained before.
