Second, distinguishing the three supports of gotra, generating the aspiration [for awakening], and preparatory praxis: The dharma of the first support corresponds in meaning to gotra; the next four corresponding to characteristics and so on correspond in meaning to generating the aspiration; the subsequent five corresponding to birth and so on correspond to the support of preparatory praxis. If treated comprehensively, then all ten dharmas universally pervade the three supports. For example, within gotra the sense of upholding is called 'support' (ādhāra); the sense of manifesting is called 'characteristic' (lakṣaṇa); the sense of tending toward is called 'wing dharma' (pakṣya); partaking of realization and abandoning defilement is called 'purified mind' (śuddhāśaya); establishing the stages based on virtues is called 'dwelling' (vihāra); taking on rebirth in accordance with living beings is called 'birth' (upapatti); gathering and transforming sentient beings is 'gathering dharma' (saṃgraha); establishing stages that benefit beings is called 'stage' (bhūmi); superior cultivation advancing upward is called 'practice' (caryā); and comprehending reality in accordance with the text is called 'establishment' (pratiṣṭhā). Since gotra is thus, the explanations by analogy for generating the aspiration and skillful means are all likewise. The above has already explained the general outline.
