The third, having much compassion, also has four causes. Relying on four objective realms, although not habitually cultivated, one is able to initiate lower, medium, and upper compassion without cessation. Jing says: Among the four, one only takes three realms and excludes oneself, because oneself is not an object of compassion. Ji says: The four realms refer to the previously listed suffering undergone by others and oneself, and so on. If one sees oneself or sees others, upon encountering any single suffering one gives rise to lower compassion; if one sees oneself or others, upon suffering any single misery one gives rise to medium compassion; if one sees oneself or others undergoing unremitting great suffering, one gives rise to upper compassion to rescue them. Or again, toward each of the four realms, one can give rise to upper, medium, and lower compassion. Ce says: Judging from this text, since it says 'although not yet habitually cultivated,' we know that from the initial bhūmi onward it is named the Ground of Generating the Mind; this is not the discriminating mundane [level].
