Ji says: The meaning here explains that among all worldly affairs, what all people jointly establish in accordance with the objects verified through the verbal designations and conceptual understandings generated by sentient beings is the substance of this reality. That is why it says 'earth is only earth,' and so forth; that is, this is only this, up to not being otherwise—namely, that this earth is only earth, water is only water, and not fire, wind, and so forth. Generating a definitive understanding is universally accepted in the world; having been transmitted from beginningless time, it is not a sudden thought of the present. These are the substance of this reality.
