Regarding "yojana": the Kośa verse says: "Paramāṇu, aṇu, gold, water, / Rabbit, sheep, ox, and dust in a chink, / Nit, louse, barley grain, finger-joint, / Each subsequent is seven times greater. / Twenty-four finger-joints make a cubit, / Four cubits make a bow-length, / Five hundred [bow-lengths make] a krośa, / Eight of these make a yojana." Calculated, it is sixteen li. "This continent is six thousand five hundred [yojanas]": the Kośa states that three sides are each two thousand, and the southern side is three and a half. One explanation says: this is based on the circumference, with the southern face being five hundred. The eastern continent measures seven thousand; it states: three sides are like Jambudvīpa, and the eastern side is three hundred and a half. One explanation says: this is its circumference, with the eastern face being one thousand. The western continent is six thousand five hundred; it states: its diameter is two thousand five hundred, and its circumference is three times this. That would be seven thousand five hundred, which is five hundred more than this. The northern continent is eight thousand; it states: each face is two thousand, and so forth. Since both are the same, we know this is based on the measure of circumference. There is also an explanation stating: this is based on the measure of diameter, which is greater than what that text says, because the schools are different.
