In the third fascicle, the uddāna says: 'Intrinsic nature and basis, / object, mental associates, and action: / through these five gates, / the various minds revolve in distinction.' The subsequent uddāna says: 'Collection of matter, associated category, / temporal marks and conditions, / wholesome and other distinct gates, / ending with skillful actions.' The distinct gates are three: first, distinction among the three natures; second, distinction of increasing spheres; third, distinction of explaining the names of the spheres. Hence there are ten gates. The first text also has two parts: first, listing them; second, explaining them individually.
