Regarding "'Mind' (manas) means the constantly functioning manas as well as the support that is the immediately preceding cessation of the six consciousness-bodies": here it generally clarifies that the past six consciousnesses are called "manas" and not merely the seventh [consciousness], because all of them possess the meaning of being a support. In actuality, this "manas" refers solely to the seventh, just as the *Cheng weishi lun* and the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* explain the distinct meanings of the three: *citta*, *manas*, and *vijñāna*. However, the Sarvāstivādins explain the differences among these three by means of name, meaning, action, time period, and designation, which differs from this. Both the seventh and eighth consciousnesses are explained through ten gates, while the sixth consciousness (*manovijñāna*) is explained through nine gates, as elaborated in the *Cheng weishi lun*.
