The treatise says: "Relying on the four focal objects, although not accustomed to them, one is able to generate lower, medium, and superior compassion without interruption." The four focal objects refer to those listed earlier, such as suffering undergone by others and oneself. If, seeing either oneself or another undergo any single suffering, one gives rise to lower compassion; if, seeing oneself and another both undergo any single suffering, one gives rise to medium compassion; if, seeing oneself and another undergo great, uninterrupted suffering, one gives rise to superior compassion to rescue them. Or again, with respect to the four focal objects, toward each one, one can give rise to superior, medium, and lower compassion.
