In the treatise's explanation of the intrinsic nature of dhyāna, where it says "either of the category of śamatha, or of the category of vipaśyanā," why does it mention vipaśyanā here? Master Jing says: It refers to depression and exaltation, and the intended meaning is śamatha. Another interpretation says: That is not so here. In this context, both terms include the word "category." When one is in the category of absorption, at that same time it is not without prajñā and the other minds and mental factors; when one is in the category of insight, it is not without absorption and the other minds and mental factors. It is merely spoken of as the category of absorption or the category of insight according to which is predominant, while in fact absorption and prajñā are constantly equal at that time. Since that proposition is so, the proposition of both, and the proposition of neither, are also like this.
