In the treatise's explanation of all varieties of dhyāna, among the six kinds it says, "second, indeterminate dhyāna." This means that if a bodhisattva manifests supernormal powers for the sake of play, this is exclusively indeterminate; if he manifests supernormal powers for the sake of gathering others in, this is exclusively wholesome, as in the text of the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā. The category of vipaśyanā is as explained at the beginning of the fascicle. The reason dhyāna of benefiting is not mentioned among the seven kinds of dhyāna is that this clarifies the doctrine by way of seven categories, hence it is not taken; if taken, it would make eight kinds. Furthermore, it is not taken because it is solely a gate of self-benefit; among the previous six kinds, it is taken because it extends to both benefits. Among these, they should be subsumed under the three kinds of dhyāna, namely, dwelling happily in the present life, and so forth.
