The treatise says, 'When eating what is eaten, all grains are crushed, and nothing in the mouth is left unexhausted.' It means that when the Buddha eats, all grains of rice are crushed, and in his mouth nothing is not finished. 'Dan' (殫) means 'exhausted'. Moreover, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: when the Buddha eats, devas are able to request [his presence] elsewhere to benefit sentient beings. Now, here, saying 'crushed' is based on the sense that there is crushing, but in reality, as a manifestation of the transformation body, its primary purpose is the Buddha's work.
